At least 12 ship passengers from South Florida died in a recent highway accident in eastern Mexico. The nationalities haven’t been confirmed yet. United States officials are trying to contact local authorities to determine if there were American citizens among the victims. So far, they have only found seven Americans among the injured victims. It’s definitely a tragedy, especially during this time of the year when everyone is out there celebrating the holidays.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The bus didn’t crash but it definitely lost control, according to a passenger from Texas. It seems that no other vehicle was involved. Other passengers say the bus was in bad shape with the front windshield entirely out. There were 31 passengers in the bus heading to the ruins at Chacchoben in Mexico. A girl under 18 was killed and 18 other victims were badly injured. They were immediately taken to hospitals in Mexico. The seven-night Royal Caribbean Cruises are Miami-based. Many passengers in the bus were from the Celebrity Equinox, which left Miami last week and the other cruise, the Serenade of the Seas, departed from Fort Lauderdale.

The Chacchoben ruins are part of Mayan settlements, dating back to 200 BC. Many tourists enjoy visiting these ruins, which include restored pyramids as well as amazing stone staircases and walls. There are also several temples found in this popular tourist attraction. These places were used to perform religious ceremonies. The Mayans were one of the most ancient native American civilizations. Their ruins are scattered throughout the world, including Central America and Mexico. The Spanish destroyed many of their sites but what does remain shows how capable the Maya Indians were and the impressive technologies they enjoyed.

According to Aventura cruise ship accident attorneys, many excursion accidents have happened near Caribbean ports in the past few years. Back in 2016, two passengers were killed in two different bus crashes, one in Dominica and another one in Jamaica. In 2011, several passengers were also injured in another bus accident in St. Martin.
