While we may think that diesel fumes, and emissions from cars, trucks and other vehicles in general, are the main contributor to air pollution, a recent study carried out by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has revealed that this isn’t the case. In fact, when the research group assessed the air around Los Angeles, it was found that the main cause of air pollution is, in fact, the cleaning products and similar chemicals we use around the home.
You may be surprised to learn that a massive 42% of the most dangerous particles found in Los Angeles air originated from consumer products, while 19% came from industrial products. Vehicle emissions, fuel storage facilities and filling stations made up the remaining 39%. This shows that, while those vehicle emissions we’ve all been preoccupied with are still a significant risk factor, they’re no longer the main cause of air pollution. The researchers found that chemicals used in common household products appeared to become more harmful when they made their way outside of the home and reacted with sunlight and nitrous oxides.
However, don’t rush to give up your regular cleaning products just yet, as more research will be required before this is considered definitive proof.
