The emotional impact of a car accident is sometimes under-estimated and overlooked until an individual starts exhibiting debilitating symptoms.
All too often, we fail to recognize the emotional trauma involved when an individual is injured or witness to a serious injury or fatal car accident. Emotional trauma can be as severely impacting and devastating as many physical injuries and should always be considered by medical personnel when treating patients involved in these types of accidents.
Emotional Impact Symptoms
Symptoms of emotional trauma may include:
- A sense of insecurity
- Loss of control over one’s life
- Inability to focus or concentrate on work or other activities
- Unusual irritability
- Inability to sleep
- Feeling confused
- Difficulty driving or riding in a vehicle
If not properly diagnosed and left untreated, these symptoms, often referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can become chronic and prevent an individual from moving forward with their lives long after the accident has occurred.
