Seeing a Doctor After a Car Accident

Every year, millions of people get up in the middle of the night on the day after Thanksgiving to stand in line, jockey for position, and wrestle each other for a new coffee maker or the latest and greatest toy. It’s called Black Friday, and it has become the craziest, if not the biggest, shopping days of the year. Stores compete with each other to get as many people through their doors as possible. In order to do that they offer huge savings on everything from clothes and video games to televisions and refrigerators. And the catch is that these items are only on sale for a short time, so you have to get there at the right time or you could cost yourself a lot of money.

If you are involved in a car accident, there’s one thing you need to do or else you could end up costing yourself a lot of money: you need to do is go see a doctor. There are a couple of reasons you should do this.  First, if you don’t see a doctor you are putting your own health at risk. When you have been in a collision, you really need to be checked out by a physician to make sure that you haven’t suffered any internal or head injuries.

On the surface, it is hard to understand why everyone wouldn’t get checked out immediately. But some people think they are too tough to be hurt in a car crash. If there is no obvious injury, such as a broken bone, they think they are fine. Others may not want to take the time and go through the hassle of scheduling a doctor’s visit.  But as the saying goes, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The second reason for going to the doctor’s office is that if you don’t visit a doctor within the first 72 hours after the accident, the insurance will automatically reduce the amount of money that they will give you as compensation for harm. Insurance companies have a software program that helps them calculate claims payouts, and one of the main triggers for the injury and harm portion of the claim has to do with whether or not there was a doctor’s visit within 3 days after the accident.

If you get into an accident, call your physician and let them know you’ve been in an accident and need to get in for an examination. They will usually work with you and try to squeeze you in sometime during that 3 day period. Another option would be to go see a chiropractic doctor in that 72 hour window, which satisfies the rule.

The purpose of visiting the doctors isn’t to try to scam the insurance company out of more money. But if you don’t go to the doctor in the first 3 days, and then later you find out that there was a serious health issue that was a result of the accident, you may not receive the compensation you deserve.
